Patient’s Age: 67-years-old
Date of Admission: 11/14/19
Admitted From: Vanderbilt Hospital
Discharge Date: TBD
Reason for stay: Motor Vehicle accident resulting in multiple fractures
How did this patient hear about Trevecca Center? Patient’s mother was also a resident at Trevecca.

Details of experience:
Mr. Barry Parnell was admitted to Trevecca Center for Rehabilitation and Healing on November 14th from Vanderbilt Hospital. Mr. Parnell was in a car accident resulting in several fractures and would require skilled nursing care. Mr. Parnell suffered a right tibia and fibula fracture, along with rib fractures, traumatic pneumothorax, acute kidney injury, neuropathy, anemia, and a left clavicle head fracture along with a surgical wound. When Mr. Parnell arrived at Trevecca, he was welcomed by our team, each conducting their own assessments, to closely monitor his needs and progress to get him well, so he can return home.

Upon arrival, Mr. Parnell was admitted to our respiratory therapy unit. In this unit, Mr. Parnell’s vitals could be monitored closely and routinely. Additionally, Mr. Parnell had a surgical wound requiring treatment by our wound care team. This team quickly got to work assessing his wound and providing the treatment that he would need in order for the wound to properly heal. The wound to be assessed was on his right leg, a large abrasion. The wound quickly reduced in size and depth and is healing beautifully without infection.

Our therapy department worked closely with the patient to support strength training and retrain the legs movements. Mr. Parnell constantly challenged himself to reach his goals and worked hand-in-hand with the staff toward that end.

Mr. Parnell is known to our Trevecca community as his mother was a resident with us. He has constantly pushed himself to get better and to regain his strength. Mr. Parnell has participated in our activities programs and interacted with other residents. Although Mr. Parnell has been through a great deal, he still managed to keep staff laughing and smiling and remained a friendly face. We are so glad that he chose to heal at Trevecca Center for Rehabilitation and Healing.

Professional of The Quarter, Ryan Turner

Congratulations to our Professional of the Quarter, Ryan Turner, Fourth Floor Nurse Manager at Trevecca Center for Rehabilitation and Healing!

A valued team member at Trevecca Center, Ryan Turner has been a part of the Trevecca team since 2014.

“I’ve been in healthcare since 2013, and before this, I worked in radiology; I fell in love with nursing during this time, and I graduated from nursing school in 2013. I just dove right in!”
After working his way up the chain in assisted living, he began a new path in skilled nursing, finding his way to Trevecca Center.

“I started on night shift, and then when the position for floor unit manager opened, I just went for it! I love the community itself; a lot of teamwork has been implemented here, and we work as a true team,” Turner shared.

A nurse through and through, Turner stated that the best part of his day is when he makes rounds on his floor. “I love seeing my team members taking pride in their work, and it shows. I love knowing the difference me and my team make for our residents.”

“As CareRite has been great to me, I want to be great for them! Everyone may have a bad day, but we’re all here for a reason; I make sure my goal never changes.”

When asked what advice he shares with his own team members, Turner shared, “It always takes a minute to find your groove, but once you do, you’re unstoppable! Make your goals happen, the only person standing in your way is you! Stay hopeful, and stay humble!”

Congratulations Ryan Turner! You are #TheCareRiteDifference!

Case Study: Trevecca Center for Rehabilitation & Healing (October 2019)

Patient’s Age: 76-years-old
Date of Admission: 10/09/19
Admitted From: VA Medical Center
Discharge Date: TBD
Discharge To: Home
Reason for stay: Sepsis

Details of experience:
Ms. Eaton arrived at Trevecca Center for Rehabilitation and Healing on October 9th, 2019 after staying at the VA Medical Center for 10 nights. She was admitted to the hospital because of a rectal abscess that was growing in size and increasing in pain. After her stay at the VA, she was brought to Trevecca Center so she would have 24-hour skilled nursing care while she is in her healing process.

After her family toured Trevecca Center and spoke to the wound care team, they decided that this would be the best fit for Ms. Eaton. After she was admitted, she was greeted by staff in the therapy department, nursing department, social services and admissions for the initial assessments and welcoming.

During week one of Ms. Eaton being at Trevecca and wound team beginning their work on her wound was large and causing Ms. Eaton a lot of pain, her wound was being treated in three different areas on her bottom, averaging length at about 7.4 cm with a width of 5.7 cm and a depth of 3.1. Her wound began to heal rather quickly with Trevecca’s wonderful wound team taking the right steps to help treat her wound.

By week three, with Ms. Eaton receiving wound pump treatment three times a week and wound team tending to her wounds, Ms. Eaton’s wounds have gone down with the largest one at 4.8 cm in length, 2.4 cm in width and 1.1 cm in depth. The reports on Ms. Eaton’s wound show nothing but improvement, and during all of the pain from her wound that Ms. Eason has endured, she has always kept a smile on her face.

We are glad Ms. Eaton chose Trevecca Center to help her during her healing journey, and are beyond satisfied with the progress that she has made. Although a discharge date hasn’t been set in stone yet, with her consistently improving, we expect that she will be returning home rather soon, and wish her nothing but the best.

Patient’s Age: 89-years-old
Date of Admission: 08/02/18
Admitted From: Vanderbilt University Hospital
Discharge Date: 05/08/19
Discharge To: Home
Reason for stay: Acute and Chronic Respiratory Failure

Details of experience:
Mildred Blount is an 89-year-old female who admitted to Trevecca Center for Rehabilitation and Healing on August 2, 2018, with a diagnosis of acute and chronic Respiratory Failure. Prior to admission, she was deemed vent dependent due to recurrent pneumonia and severe muscular weakness Due to her diagnosis, she had undergone bedside surgery, receiving a feeding tube and tracheostomy. On October 3, 2018, shortly following her admission to Trevecca, she began weaning from the ventilator. By January 19, 2019, she was successfully weaned from the vent and performing trach collar trials. Less than a month later; on February 17, 2019, she was successfully decannulated!

However, that victory was short-lived, due to her recurrent pneumonia, and having to be retracted. Although she was discouraged, she never gave up hope. Immediately following her episode with pneumonia, Mrs. Blount was determined to wean from the vent again. She started vent weaning again on March 18, 2019, and was successfully weaned from the ventilator a second time! On April 20, 2019, Mrs. Blount suffered a third battle with pneumonia and had to be once again placed back on the ventilator. On May 8, 2019, she restarted trach collar trials and was successfully decannulated on May 27th. Mrs. Blount was able to overcome one of her biggest obstacles and go home to her family on May 31, 2019!

We wish her the best of luck and thank her greatly for choosing to heal with our team.

Supporting the Nashville Community Through Education: Fall Prevention for Aging Adults

no images were found

Trevecca Center was proud to partner with the Nashville Public Library, Goodlettsville branch, for an educational day alongside those in the community in support of fall prevention awareness. Clinical professionals, Ava Quick & Sonda McEver of the Trevecca team, led the seminar by sharing prevention protocols while also providing free balance assessments for those in attendance.

“According to the CDC, Every 19 mins an aging adult dies from a fall-related injury, and every 11mins is admitted to the ER due to a fall. It is critical that we provide resources to our senior communities to help minimize the risk of falling. We look forward to partnering with programs like “Be Well” and the NPL in pursuit of this goal.” – Ava K. Quick, MS, CCC-SLP

Elizabeth Roth of the Nashville Public Library shared, “Nashville Public Library was pleased to partner with physical therapy professionals from Trevecca Center in order to bring a falls prevention program to seniors in the community. The falls self-assessment checklist and exercise demonstrations made it interactive and engaging for all who attended. We will definitely partner around this topic again!”
